More than 200 innovation leaders & practitioners joined up in small and focused workshops held by Astra Zeneca, Volvo Cars, CGI, Googol, RISE & Stora Enso. All were there to meet with the purpose of sharing knowledge and of course meeting peers in a setting full of trust.

The evening of October 24 was the evening of our gala dinner and One Wish Award. The afternoons brought time to engage with each other, inspiration, thought leaders as well as a special workshop by Umeå municipality on the future city and how old fashioned gaming can be a way of innovating.

“The role play method turned out even better than we had hoped for. This was the first time we had used it, but we have been thinking about this method for years and Innovation in Action was the perfect place to test it, especially with the theme of Surviving the future where AI was a perfect story to use for this. We learnt so much when developing this workshop, both around AI but also on how to frame complex questions, how to make interesting characters, how to build a believable story. We have so many more ideas on how to make this method even better and where currently discussing with a couple of companies from Inovation in Action how we can use this in their organisation, but also some other companies that didn’t attend.
The first day we witnessed some small things that we saw we could improve on, we also received some great feedback so that we could make the second day even better and it was of course an honor to receive the award for the best workshop on the second day. In 2016 Arbetsförmedlingen started to work with innovation as a tool to meet the current and upcoming challenges of Sweden. The work has been unorthodox for an Government agency in working with theatre, hackathons with Spotify, open data, virtual reality, artificial intelligence and building an innovation culture.

Try to anwer this question for yourself: “What is innovative recruitment to you?”


Competence can be found in different places and look different from what we expect. The purpose of the tank meeting at Arbetsförmedlingen was to provide a new, wider perspective on the concept of competence by searching for competence in places where you normally wouldn’t look. Furthermore, the goal was to explore and experience how we can find the right competence to our organizations by discovering different possibilities and ways of recruitment. We must dare to think in new, innovative ways and take on someone else’s shoes.

Arbetsförmedlingen and Myndigheten för Delaktighet comment on the day: 

How can companies and organisations work with innovative recruitment in order to find talents, competence and contribute to a social sustainable development for the organisation and society at the same time?

Not taking advantage of peoples skills is a waste economically as well as social. Skills, soft and hard, can be found where organisations doesn’t normally look. Working pervasively with diversity and sustainable development can strengthen the organisation and attract talented people.

During the tankmeeting, the participants role-played as jobseekers, statistically classified as persons having a weak position on the labour market. The challenge was to make the employers see other skills than the stated labels of “disadvantages”.

Arbetsförmedlingen gave a couple of inspirational talks on how companies have worked with a new perspective and seen the benefits of recruiting persons with disabilities, youths, and newly arrived in Sweden.

The participants were also given a task to solve: how to innovatively recruit a large number of employees in a short period of time, on the Swedish labour market. The Swedish labour market is currently characterised by a historical large mismatch; with a strong economy for many companies and at the same time a lot of people unemployed, and lacking the formal competence sought by employers.

The results were presented for a Dragons Den jury consisting of Arbetsförmedlingen, Myndigheten för delaktighet and the One Wish-award winning company in 2017, Just Arrived. The Dragons Den workshop concept is a tool were individuals and teams pitch ideas to a jury of top management. The concept have been used by some of the participating organisations at the tankmeeting. Pros and cons of using Dragons Den were discussed.

The participants seemed to have a rewarding day, with new perspectives, exchanging ideas and making new connections – as well in theory as in practice. The organisations in the winning team in the Dragons Den workshop will get their prize in 2018; an offer from Arbetsförmedlingen and Myndigheten för delaktighet to come and help the organisations individually with planning their strategy for innovative recruitment. The winners were:

Telling stories has been part of us since the beginning of time. One of the most important stories you have is your corporate history and vision. This will impact on your success.

A story isn’t always a timeline, it’s a gathering of moments, lessons learned, motivation, frustration, and success.

It might not come easy to tell stories, but as with any tool, with practice it can both make and brake what you do.

When people invest in you – they are investing in your story. How people perceive your story will influence how they will interact and be your ambassadors into the future.

Once you’re able to convincingly deliver a story that reaches the Amygdala part of the brain , you will be able to connect in a way that growth charts and hockey sticks never will.

Effective storytelling captures the hearts and minds of your target audience.  It makes your innovations stand out above the rest.

During this workshop day we were taken on a historical trip from 1883 where Alfa Laval has its roots to where they are today and into the future.

If Alfa Laval is committed to win instead of playing not to lose, how do they create the best possible conditions for the next products or business models by using story telling.

We set out to find how you can implement the same strategy in your own organization.

Participants had the opportunity to share their point of view and were given insights and methods to bring home.

Our host Peter Thorwid of Alfa Laval comments the day:

“The story telling workshop became very successful from Alfa Laval’s horizon. The final presentations, six well-known stories about The New Alfa Disc, all six will be useful. They can be used as good and less good examples of storytelling techniques, but also in continued work with performance-related innovations within Alfa Laval’s product groups, not just for the Separators.

The involvement of the participants was particularly exciting to see, perhaps the fantastic framing of Hamra Gård contributed to this. Imagine getting together in the same building as the best R & D cows in the world, both eyesight and scent touched us. The visits in the other barns were also very rewarding.

We were able to showcase some of Swedens industrial history, DeLavals Hamra Farm with Alfa Laval’s Separator Technique. Only that is a story in itself.

Now I look forward to Innovation in Action where we will meet again in sharing knowledge and insights. Have you registered your participation?”

This Tank Meeting introduced the CGI Digital Day Methodology, which aims at increasing awareness by experiencing the power of industry disruption.
The digital day methodology helps people get insights in an area where disruption is close in any and every industry.

The aim of the tank meeting was to explore different perspectives of Blockchain through role-play and scenario acceleration. We focused on the Blockchain revolution which is on its way, and we wanted the participants to experience this as we invited some organizations to this journey.  One conclusion all participants agreed upon was that blockchain will affect you and your business.

Together with AstraZeneca we discussed new methods and ways for large and small organizations to collaborate and cooperate.

The Bio Hub is AstraZeneca’s contribution to a more dynamic and competitive life science ecosystem in Scandinavia. A new business model of adding value & reducing risks. Our discussion started here and expanded into the participants industries.t the Mölndal site Astra Zeneca opens up their offices, laboratory space and facilities to academic groups and biotech companies that could benefit from AstraZeneca’s corporate R&D infrastructure and R&D competence. How does Astra Zeneca align high calibre academic groups to the AstraZeneca strategy, and biotech companies that could gain competitive advantage by tapping into their expertise.

AstraZenecas BioVentureHub lead by CEO Magnus Björsne is a new business model for the life science industry as it adds value by allowing companies and academic groups within the BioVentureHub to operate at a lower cost base, by utilizing the AstraZeneca capabilities, know-how and infrastructure.

There is a huge value base within pharma and the BioVentureHub introduces novel mechanisms for its utilisation. The BioVentureHub business model enables true win-win constructions for all parties involved: the company/academic group, its investors and AstraZeneca.

WS 2: Avoid the Void

Many firms fail in bringing an often valuable portfolio of opportunities to the project and ultimately solution phase. This workshops focus is on bridging the void “where great ideas die due to lack of decision and resources”. Experiences were shared and tools taught and developed. Focus was also on putting more traction behind the portfolio and delivering better idea/project ratios.

WS 3: Create a HYPE

Creating a hype, it’s about connecting to fans.

In this workshop we started from the fact that you already have a great product/service. You have created a “WOW” but how to create a pull from the market was adressed. Aim is to find how to generate fans.

We tried different models for this and got deep insights on how matters such as customer involvement can influence the whole process.

WS 5: How Entrepreneurship Brings Better Innovation Capabilities

This workshops focus was around entrepreneurial activities and behavior in large organizations and how collaboration between large-small, slow-fast and mature-novel firms can take place and methods to accomplish this.

We looked at corporate venturing, collaborative methods, science parks and incubators and how to work with these.

We talked about conversions of fans into ambassadeurs and alike topics. We had visiting examples and nota bene, this was a workshop, not a lecture, so we expect the room to be a large part of the content provision and finding methods and tools for creating value, as always at Innovation In Action.

Pär Larshans told us about his experience in building an extreme fan base. How to turn fans into customers and customers into fans. This based on the work and the launch of the sustainability work at MAX. We also heard about how Pär uses these experiences in Ragn Sells where he works as CSO.

Johan Ronnestam is one of Sweden’s leading authority in the field of creative and conceptual thinking, and skill of innovating brands and communication. Johan (Follow @insta) will lead and involve us in a dialogue on how to take us from the WOW to the commercialization.

Elin Elkehag – Stilla shared her story of how she built a hardware startup from an idea to a patent pending product in 100 days and involved us in a dialogue on how to involve fans and customers in the launch and commercialization of a product through crowdfunding.

Exponential Thinking Workshop

In our 35th Tank Meeting we explored the theory and practice around prototyping and exponential thinking without making it complex.  How to go from exploration of a topic to prototyping it in just a few hours.

Innovation Pioneers and Stenas focus in this tank meeting was to understand why striving for  exponential thinking 10X  is not ten times harder, but maybe 1024 times more worth it. Learn why incremental and linear is not safe at all, and how exponential thinking is the best way to mitigate risk.

Normally we think in linear steps but the world is changing exponentially. What if your steps instead of being 1, 2, 3, 4, 5..10 would be 1, 2, 4, 8, 16…1024.

We explored the theory around exponential thinking and why it is important for your company. Participants had the opportunity to practically test the theory in a workshop.

Active members signed up with 1 person from each organization.

Lean discovery - From product to service

We are in the middle of a transformation that enables new habits and behaviors. The late 90’s IT-boom outlined how the Internet would revolutionize our lives e.g. with on-line booking and net shopping, as well social media took its first stumbling steps. The real change came to take longer than expected and with the introduction of iPhone in 2007 the real transformation started.

Today relations with consumers are taking place in many different touch points and channels. Physical, from person to person and digital. Products are one important part of building relationships and loyalty with customers. To win in the market place products must be interacting with smart service solutions to become profitable and meaningful in peoples everyday life.


The challenge for many corporations today is to create a coherent experience for people, customers and employees built on products combined with relevant services.

How is it possible to rapidly build digital service solutions in parallel with physical products?

This was done through the experiences of our network and a joint workshop. The participants got insights in what can be done in their own organization.

Aim of workshop was to

  • Understand Lean Discovery as a method approach
  • Learn more about collaborative methods and experience prototyping methods
  • Understand the power of early prototyping and how that enables rapid market entry.

Workshop – In the workshop we worked with how we rapidly can create a product combined with relevant services. Using prototyping as one method. Within 3 hours, we created and sprint prototyped integrated product and service solutions.

Reports from the day

While discussing the outcomes we received a typical question that many organizations ask themselves when assessing whether to do a sprint or not involving customers in an early phase.

“What of the risk of breaching confidentiality when inviting external parties at an early stage?” The answer to this was that it is a typical way of thinking which locks the organization in an inside and out mindset instead of having the customers POV. There are ways of identifying customer needs anonymously during the process. Ask yourselves, what you may gain from having the customers perspective and what are the risks of not doing it.
